Sun in Ha – 16 April 2015

Today the weather suddenly cleared in the afternoon, so I could check out the sun again. There was some great stuff to watch today. A large prominence and very active regions.

The seeing was also slightly better, compared to the terrible seeing conditions last week ( 4 / 10 ). So managed to capture some better images.

First, the nice prominences close to AR2325.

Sun in Ha – 13 April 2015

Today seeing conditions weren’t much better ( 2 / 10 ), but couldn’t resist capturing some interesting prominences, including some faint loops that looked amazing through the eyepiece.

AR 2321 is very active, flaring up regularly.

SW Esprit 120 + Quark Chromosphere + TS 0.5 reducer + QHY5L-IIc . Stacked in Autostakkert and processed in Photoshop.

First, some Nice but faint looping prominences on the limb, close to AR 3221. Very happy capturing those, as they only lasted about 15 minutes:

Then an interesting looking prominence a bit further down the limb:

Sun in Ha – 12 April 2015

A new very active sunspot (AR 2321) has arrived, showing lots of Activity. AR 2320 is also still very active.

Seeing conditions were about the worst I have experienced yet so far ( 1 / 10 ). Almost didn’t want to bother image anything, as getting a good focus was impossible. Tho I could not resist to try and make the best of it.

Sun in Ha – 10 April 2015

The sun showing a lot of activity lately and I have been lucky with the weather so far.

Tho, I wish for better seeing conditions. Today was no different, it’s like capturing through boiling water with haze and interfering clouds. It’s very hard getting focus and capture enough frames to produce decent images.

Nonetheless, I am very pleased with today’s results, seeing conditions and all aside.

First up, a nice panorama of prominences on the eastern limb of the sun:

Then some solar Activity on the western limb. Same spot that produced the solar flare yesterday. Seems a new active region is coming around (hopefully):

And here a nice prominence close by the active region on the western limb:

Last but not least, active region AR 2320. I tried something new, converting to grayscale, change to 8 bit channel and then change mode to bi-color in Photoshop:

Sun in Ha – 9 April 2015

Today I managed to capture an active solar flare on the limb of the sun today. It was a fantastic sight! So bright! The event lasted about 30 minutes.

I managed to capture two avi’s, one minute apart, showing how quickly the shape changes, compared to regular Prominences.

Seeing conditions were pretty bad as usual, but due to a Lucky clear sky for few hours I managed to record enough usable frames to process some decent images out of it.

Sun in Ha – 8 April 2015

After few days of cloudy weather, today it cleared up a little. Tho, a thin haze and rolling thin clouds hampered seeing a bit.

Imaging was very challenging today due to bad seeing, haze and rolling clouds. So it was very hard to recording enough usable frames, tho in the end I still managed to process two decent images out of it.

First, Sunspot AR 2320 region, showing quite some Activity.

Sun in Ha – 4 April 2015

Today there is not much prominence activity. The one from yesterday has gotten much smaller and fainter.

Seeing conditions this morning were quite terrible, could not get any good focus. So again, lot of frames had to be discarded.

SW Esprit 120 + Quark Chromosphere + TS 0.5 reducer + QHY5L-IIc . Stacked in Autostakkert and processed in Photoshop.

First, the remainder of yesterday’s prominence.

On the surface, there were some fantastic filaments visible, from which I recorded this one (same snake as yesterday 🙂 ). Inverted filter applied.

A new sunspot is emerging, showing some activity. AR 2318. Also here, inverted filter applied.

Part 2 – Solar Prominence Touch Down – 3 April 2015

In the afternoon the seeing got quite a bit better and so I managed to record a bit better quality frames.

The Prominence that looked like it was lifting off this morning, seems to be touching down again towards the surface.
It was a fantastic sight through the eyepiece, with the tip of the prominence looking like a spiraling vortex.

Solar Prominence Lift Off! – 3 April 2015

Today, the towering prominence from yesterday detached itself and is lifting off from the surface. A mesmerizing sight.

Shame the seeing conditions were terrible (as seems to be the norm these days), but managed to squeeze out some decent frames from the recorded AVI’s.
